If you’re struggling to get everyone to the dinner table at the same time each night, you could try for another meal in the day, or one meal a week where everyone is expected to sit down together, or even some special quiet time just before bed, depending upon the age of your children and your family commitments. ![]() While dinnertime works best for us it’s not right for everyone. While this can be partly attributed to personality but I do believe including regular time to sit down and talk together in your family’s routine can also make a big difference. In talking with friends, I know that not all children are open and forthcoming when it comes to sharing information, especially when asked about their day at school. Both of which are important at any age but particularly as children grow beyond the early childhood years.Įngaging your kids in conversation around the dinner table is invaluable. Michael goes on to say that while mental health professionals cannot be sure why this is so, that the most obvious reasoning relates to family members taking regular time to eat and talk together which allows parents to keep tabs on how their children are doing and children to grow up with the knowledge that they can talk to their family members about problems and concerns. “The biggest single preventative factor for anxiety and depressive illnesses in young people is being in a family that has 5-6 shared meals together with the television and other communication devices off.” You can read more here. What I had not previously thought about was the mental health benefits and I was interested to read the thoughts of parenting educator, Michael Grose, regarding this I have long been an advocate of regularly eating meals together as a family as a means of encouraging the positive eating habits of young children, and as the most effective way for them to learn socially acceptable behaviour and manners. Listen to the song and you’ll hear how the second note is emphasized to match the start of the bar. Notice that this riff starts just before the start of the bar. If you’re just getting started learning bass, this riff is a good way to work on your basic technique and timing skills. This riff is also included in my easy guitar riffs lesson and for good reason – it’s incredibly simple to learn. The guide is written for guitar, but it includes a list of songs in Eb Tuning you might want to learn on bass. If you are interested in experimenting with Eb Tuning, check out this guide to Eb Tuning here. You’ll hear how the feeling behind songs and riffs slightly change when you tune down. Some bands like to play in Eb Tuning as a way to get a slightly heavier or more aggressive tone. You can play all your riffs in this tuning and while it will feel the same to play, they will sound different. The great thing about this tuning (called ‘E flat’ tuning or ‘half-step-lower’) is that everything is played the same way. This means the E string tunes down to Eb (E-flat), the A string down to A flat, D string down to D flat, and G string down to G flat. Use a tuner to tune each string down a half-step. If you have never tried changing your bass tuning to anything else before, give it a go with this riff. Knowing how long to hold a note and when to stop it plays a big part in keeping a tight rhythm. Some notes at the end of the riff are held for most of the bar, while other times the last note ends by the next beat. When learning this riff, listen closely to how long each note is held. Here’s how to play the riff with your bass in Standard Tuning: To play this riff while keeping your bass in Standard Tuning, we can simply shift it up an octave. The actual song will sound a half-step lower in pitch. If you keep your bass in Standard Tuning and try to play the above riff along with the song, it won’t sound right. Here’s how to play the riff with your bass tuned down a half step to Eb Tuning (Eb Ab Db Gb): It’s very simple to play as long as you pay attention to your timing and rests. The bass riff is what drives this song, so it’s naturally a fun riff to learn. Practicing this riff with a metronome or drum machine is a great way to dial in your timing and develop a strong sense of rhythm. Part of what made this song so popular when it first came out was the way the simple ‘bass’ riff paired with the thumping beat. Practice this riff along with a metronome (120 bpm) or a drum machine set to a quarter note bass drum pattern (just like the song). ![]() Shift the other notes up or down the strings to make them easier to play. Once you learn the notes on the fingerboard, you can learn to move notes around just like this for any song you want.įor practice, start with the first version and try to keep your hand around the 5th and 7th frets. Play around with both versions to get a feel for what you prefer. ![]() This is more in line with how some bassists would play a riff like this. With the second version, your hand stays pretty much at the same place and you jump from string to string. There is a reason Jack White plays it that way (because he uses an open-tuning), but this way may not be the best way to actually play it on bass. In the first version, all the notes are played on the same string and you need to move your hand up and down the string. ![]() The big difference is how they feel to play. Learning how to figure out which fingers are best to play something is a skill you should start working on as a beginner.īoth versions play the exact same notes, so they should sound the same when you play them. For example, which finger should you use for the very first note to make it easy to play the 10th fret note?Įxperiment with using different fingers throughout the riff to figure out which feels the most comfortable to play. When you play this riff, think about which fingers make the most sense for each note. This is the version based on how Jack White plays the riff on his guitar: I’ll give you two different finger positions for this riff so you can experiment with playing the same notes in different positions on the fingerboard. This makes his guitar sound similar to a bass. Guitarist Jack White uses a DigiTech Whammy pedal to pitch-shift his guitar tone down an octave. This song doesn’t actually use a bass (the band doesn’t have a bassist), but it’s a great bass riff for beginners to learn. You probably expected to see this song on this list as it’s such an instantly recognizable riff and very easy for beginners to learn. 15.1 Related Guides and Lessons: Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes ![]() during the first quarter in the game against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Septemin Inglewood, California. We tried three separate approaches on getting to the stadium. Unfortunately, our experiences make it appear that the traffic situation may actually have grown worse. Despite COVID (proof of vaccination or negative test required), we attended three: the Rams-Buccaneers game in September, a Rolling Stones concert in October, and a pivotal Chargers-Chiefs game in December. Nonetheless, I wanted to take my family to events at SoFi this fall. Massive game day traffic jams and blockages of residential neighborhoods appeared to be an Achilles heel of the beautiful new stadium. Parking problems were originally reported in August, when the first events occurred after the lifting of COVID capacity and social distancing rules. The price of on-site parking starts at $60 and goes up depending on location and the size of your vehicle, say if you want to tailgate. A short answer appears to be “not enough.” Although many websites say there are 17 parking lots at SoFi, the actual number of on-site parking spots appears to be classified, despite repeated requests to SoFi for a number. One number not mentioned: the number of parking spaces. Originally pegged at $2 billion, it cost $5 billion, making it the most expensive stadium ever built in the United States.Īccording to “ SoFi Stadium By the Numbers,” SoFi is 3.1 million square feet in size, on a 298-acre lot (three times larger than Disneyland), and is set 100 feet below grade to accommodate the flight path of nearby Los Angeles International Airport. SoFi Stadium was completed in 2020, paid for privately by Rams owners Stan Kroenke. The size of the crowds, efforts to protect the surrounding neighborhood with permit parking (which doesn’t stop cars from clogging the streets) and the “limited traditional onsite parking at SoFi makes improving transportation logistics imperative. As Inglewood resident Adán Gonzalez, 22, put it, “The entire traffic situation cannot be emphasized enough, it is horrendous.” Yet for attendees and residents alike, the enormous stadium has created a host of traffic and parking problems. When Milford Sill died of pneumonia in 1952, Sill's mother Oneta moved with Judee and her older brother Dennis to Los Angeles, where Oneta soon met and married Tom and Jerry animator Kenneth Muse. Her father, Milford "Bun" Sill, an importer of exotic animals for use in films, owned a bar in Oakland, in which Sill learned to play the piano. Judith Lynne Sill was born in Studio City, Los Angeles, California, on October 7, 1944, and spent her early childhood in the Oakland, California area. Her demos were released with other rarities on the 2005 collection Dreams Come True. She did not find commercial success, and no obituary was published however, several artists have since cited her as an influence. Sill struggled with addiction through much of her life, and died of a drug overdose in 1979. In 1974, Sill recorded demos for a third album, which was never completed. The first artist signed to David Geffen's label Asylum, Sill's eponymous debut album was released in 1971, followed by Heart Food in 1973. She was influenced by Bach, and wrote lyrics drawing on Christian themes of rapture and redemption. There’s a huge difference between me and my contemporaries, in some ways.Judith Lynne Sill (Octo– November 23, 1979) was an American singer-songwriter. I polarised a lot of people, and I still do. I’m very grateful to have outlived that, and for the album to have come back into an era where it’s accepted again. Shortly after Stormcock I was hospitalised anyway, and was told I had seven years to live. ![]() I’ve probably survived longer because of it. If Stormcock had been successful I might well have become a megalomaniac, but I don’t really think it would’ve changed anything.īeing marginalised has had its strong points. Of course it wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but it would have made a lot more noise than it actually did at the time. And it was a new direction for people to look at. I knew that if Stormcock had been taken at face value it was a revolution in itself. And after that I was effectively marginalised by EMI. Anything that was selling in millions they got behind, but they didn’t want to break new ground. So before the record was finished it was outlawed. I knew they weren’t satisfied, because they wanted a single and there was no single appearing. Unfortunately the record company, who came in once or twice to listen, made almost flattering noises then went away. When I sit down to write, the number-one consideration is timelessness. In order to remain current, songs have to pertain to what’s happening in a modern sense. Your own interpretation of it is always there, but I automatically couch things in an amount of generality that can’t be pinpointed to one event. When I sing the chorus I have her in mind, but that’s not what the song is about. Is it true that the song is also about your first wife? And it’s a question that remains unanswered. It’s now over forty years later and people are still asking the same question, but it’s actually got a lot closer to the bone now. I was thinking about maintaining this shape in society for a very long time and making this point when I wrote it in 1970. In my mind that song is always the question: me and my woman – what are we doing on this planet? Are we part of the ongoing fauna and flora, or are we likely to last very much longer? If we’re going to have longevity on the planet, we have to find ways to live that are more controlled than they are now. Is Me And My Woman the most directly personal song on the album? As I was coming into the making of Stormcock I realised there were other places I could go to quite easily, without a moment’s thought. The core of GIF, the method to store images is a bitmap compressed with a GIF version of the LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) algorithim. So here - as on many useful websites I came across - I'll give a little introduction to the general GIF format. ![]() So I ended up taking a look into the GIF format and decided to reach my goal, it wasn't that complicated at all. And when transparency was involved, nothing worked. So I started searching for a good tool to do that for me: NOTHING! All tools I found didn't do as expected or totally messed up the result. I found many but they didn't match my color theme so as they are free to modify I tried to change the color - that's easy enough for simple images using GIMP but when it comes to animated GIFs, it quicky becomes a time-consuming nightmare: one simple animation, 100 frames and with GIMP, you can only adjust the colors of one frame per time.
